The basic medical assessment will involve the following:

  • Medical Questionnaire
  • Blood Pressure
  • B.M.I /Height & Weight
  • General Health
  • Hearing
  • Vision & Colour vision assessment
  • Mobility

For the Network Rail Drug and Alcohol Screening, individuals will need to provide a urine sample for analysis. Our collection officers will send the to our RISQS approved UKAS Accredited Laboratory for testing. The laboratory tests the sample for traces of:

  • Amphetamines (incl. Methamphetamines)
  • Benzodiazepines
  • Cannabis
  • Cocaine
  • EDDP (Methadone metabolite)
  • MDMA
  • Opiates
  • Propoxyphene

All prescribed medication must be accurately declared to the collection officer at the time of processing.

Results can take up to 3 days, and longer if there are any contraindications. Additional charges will be passed on to the individual if the sample needs to be processed by a medical review officer MRO.  Positive samples will lead to a 5-year suspension, notified on your Sentinel profile.

Alcohol is assessed using an intoximeter (breath test), and results are immediate.

You will need to bring valid and original proof of Identification and National Insurance. These may include:

  • Photographic ID such as (Driving Licence/Passport/ Sentinel Card/CSCS-CPCS cards.)
  • National Insurance such as (original NI card/P45/P60)

If you wear glasses/contact lenses please bring these along. If you have been prescribed medication from your GP then please bring along details of this medication. If you have recently taken over the counter medication please ensure you have the details so that it can be noted during the assessment/drug screening. Everything you need will be clearly explained on your joining instructions prior to attendance.

If you are a new starter to the rail industry you will most likely need a combined medical and drug & alcohol screening. All new entrants must pass a rail specific medical examination and produce a urine sample that will be screened. There are different Levels of Rail medical – the standard one for track workers is medical level 1.

  • National Identity card
  • Industry Accredited (Sentinel Card/CPCS/CSCS)

All forms of Photographic identification MUST be in ORIGINAL form. A picture on your phone or photocopy etc will NOT do. If you have any difficulties please let us know prior to booking.

  • 10 years, up to the age of 40
  • 5 years, until the age of 65
  • renewed annually thereafter

If at anytime an individual is subject to significant illness, injury or change in personal circumstances that could impact their fitness to work, they should discuss this with their primary sponsor who may refer the individual to an occupational health assessment before normal work is continued.

A new Drug & Alcohol screening is required to initially join the rail industry and begin working for a primary sponsor (an approved rail company). From this point onwards you will only need to complete a new screening if you wish to change primary sponsor and your last screening was over 12 weeks ago.

Rail industry staff can be subject to additional screenings such as Random/for-cause and post-incident though these are arranged by your employer.
